Early life

tan, the son of Percival Baker and Elizabeth Curley, was born on 4 July 1912. His father died when he was seven years old; it then became his responsibility to get the younger children to school. His mother was poor, so he and his older brothers helped keep the family going by cleaning cars. He grew up quickly, and had to accept responsibility.   In his youth he spent all his free time at the beach and was a champion swimmer.

Work

1 BHP = Broken Hill Proprietary Limited.

After he left school he had a variety of activities. He worked in carnival side shows. He had a delicatessen, and then a fish and chips shop. For a time he worked for BHP1 but, for most of his career, was employed by the Department of Public Works in Newcastle where he became head time-keeper.

Marriage

It was through swimming that he met Jean McInnes whom he married at a young age. Problems beset them as their first two children died as infants and, at times, their relationship was volatile. They adopted a girl, Kay, and had three children of their own: Kerry, Robert and Lee. From the time that Jean became terminally ill, Stan ceased arguing with her. He knew that one day he would be following her coffin, and wanted to do that without regret. Jean was difficult and, at the time, his young daughter Lee could not understand why he did not stand up for himself. Jean died in 1969.

In 1993, Lee recalled:

His character

Dad was a complex character. As a young man he had been a rebel, but he was also very kind, very compassionate and very popular. He tried to project a tough exterior, but underneath he was a real, old softie. He raised me. He was mother and father to me - not a very affectionate person, and we seldom hugged, but there was a very special bond between us.

ean, the daughter of Donald McInnes and Lucy Miller, was born on 21 January 1916 probably in Sydney, Australia. She became a champion swimmer and through this she met Stanley Baker whom she married when she was about seventeen years old. In 1993, her daughter Lee recalled:

A difficult life

Children

My mother had a very difficult life. Her father was a violent man, so she grew up with problems. She was pregnant when she married my father, and the baby girl died at the age of eighteen months. She then had another baby, who lived only three days. Her parents sent her away to Sydney and, while she was away, they cleared out everything associated with the baby. So my mother really never resolved that loss. After that, she never really gave herself to anyone. She was always withdrawn and bitter. She and my father then adopted a baby girl, Kay, who was born on 7 August 1938.  Later they had two sons: Kerry, born on 6 February 1943 and Robert, born 27 October 1947. I was born by caesarean section in 1959, some eleven years later.

Grandchildren

For an account of her illness and death see the entry for Lee Baker [17070AF]

Kay married Eric Gardner and had three children: Carol (b.1962), Robyn (b.1963) and Jeffery (b.1969).  Kerry married Elizabeth Schulha and also had three children: Evette (b.1971), Gavin (b.1972) and Mark (b.1979). Robert married Ruth Rogers. Their children were: Kellie (b.1969), Paul (b.1972) and Kristin (b.1980). Robert and Ruth later divorced and Robert remarried.

Lee always remembered her mother as being ill, in and out of hospital. On 16 October 1969 she died of a heart attack, but probably also had cancer.

ark, the son of Joseph Rumble and Joyce Caesar, was born on 31 August 1947. He trained as a doctor and (in 1989) had a practice in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. He married Jane Graham (nee Flatt), a nursing sister who by a previous marriage had four children. They brought up two of the children by Jane's first marriage and had three girls of their own1.  In 1991 Mark was living at Hopton Hall, Hall Road, Hopton, Suffolk, NR31 9AX, England. By  May 1993 he had moved to:  Home Farm House, Somerleyton, Lowestoft, Suffolk, England  NR32 5PR.2002 is at The Orangery, Main Road, Filby Great Yarmouth, NR29 3HN.email mark.rumble@freeuk.com In 2002 he had remarried a second time, to Juliet, and now has a stepdaughter Laura, musician and hairdresser, as has been her mother. Written 2002. Julie and I got together about 4 years ago now. She has been the driving force in getting this part of the family back together. For a while we lived over the Leonard Ley surgery in the flat. Three years ago we started looking for somewhere else to live, and found the Orangery as the first place we looked at. We wanted somewhere run down to restore together. It was so hard to buy as no one will lend money on a wreck.

inside was indeed a wreck!

Eventually the project had to be financed through the business. We were sure that we were going to get it, but it took 5 months, and nearly was bought by others at least twice. It was auctioned at one point, but the vendor was too greedy to let it go. Fortune smiled on us a year later when we started work with the most brilliant small builder. Three men did most of the work, but the builder recommended some really excellent contractors for the joinery, plumbing and electrics, and all are amazed at the stunning results. I supervised the work, and we did all the clearing and the garden, and decorating and planning.

inside now

Julie’s daughter Laura lived with us at the flat, and has continued there with her boyfriend.

Mark, Julie, Laura, Jon.

Samantha lived with us at the Orangery for a few months but now lives with her boyfriend in Lowestoft. She was very stressed after living on her own and then a difficult job in Portsmouth. Now she is working in the office at the surgery. Amanda finished her nursing training at the beginning of the year, and has been working since on the medical wards at the James Paget Hospital. Christian has settled quickly into a new school at Belton after they moved from the rented farmhouse at David’s work in Westleton, and bought their own home in Belton. Gina has been over with children, and Marion visited also with Casey, and we had a most wonderful evening with the three youngsters together (Casey, Luis and Sofia). They ate themselves silly also.

David Warren, Christian, Amanda, Samantha, Sheena.

We held a party to celebrate my being 25 years in practice in Yarmouth combined with a year of our marriage, and a housewarming for the Orangery. There was a marquee outside the front of the house, and we had a disco in that, and there was live music in the Orangery. Samantha sang, as did Julie, and I; Julie playing the grand piano. Then Laura and her friend took over, and later one of the local gynae consultants and his family continued on after midnight with accordion and guitar. Fireworks were spectacular and the noise summoned the police it appears, though they never came up the drive.

We discovered a small musical soiree venue in a barn near Beccles, that holds regular evenings with singers and piano. Another time we were out at Wymondham looking at gardens to inspire us. Radio Norfolk had said there were 20 or so gardens open for the weekend, but when we got there we found none at all!  There was a rectory garden open in a nearby village that we visited, and after that we drove around to go back to Wymondham. We somehow stumbled on a large hall well off the beaten track that advertised pick your own strawberries, and I said let’s go in to snoop for interest. It so happened that they were also advertising a concert, but when we came out of the walled fruit gardens, Julie suddenly remembered she was supposed to be  baby sitting in Gorleston. We jumped into the car and raced away towards Norwich, but it was clear that we were too late.

Julie’s niece Alicia had been successful the previous October at the BBC in London, in winning the title of BBC young chorister of the year. We had driven to London to lend our support, arriving ten minutes prior to the start, which was a bit nail biting. However Alicia won this year, having been runner up the year before. Julie had recorded the initial entry with her and arranged the music. You may have since heard Alicia on the radio, or seen and heard her on “songs of praise”. She was on this particular afternoon singing at St Nicholas in Yarmouth. She also sang for us at our wedding.

The wedding.

Having decided we couldn’t possibly make it to Gorleston, we decided after some phone calls not to try. The decision then was to return to the concert at Kimberly Hall, but then we couldn’t find it again, and no one in the vicinity knew it either. Eventually we discovered it again, but missed the start of the concert, and were sat in the middle of the choir. We were encouraged to join in towards the end. During the interval we got talking with Ronald Buxton, the owner of Kimberly Hall. He had bought the place in 1952 and had been at one time elected as a conservative who displaced a member of the Wilson government in a famous by election at Leytonstone. His wife was the conductor, and he himself plays piano and organ, Julie was invited to see his collection of pianos after the concert. We were subsequently invited to attend the next concert, at which was the Norwich boys choir. We then were sent off to buy a picnic as everyone else had one for the interval, and managed to miss the first half of that concert as well. Then we had a tour of the house and the roof, and Julie played on the organ at the top of the grand staircase that made the whole house vibrate. We understand that we will receive an invite to the Christmas concert.

Recently we have been visiting Aylesham which is a delightful small country market town about half an hours drive away and quite unspoiled. One week we went there just as the local auctioneers were closing and the auction shed had items in it left unsold from the previous day. They had tickets on with the reserve prices for next week. As a result I bid for a harmonium that we spotted unsold, and we have now that item obtained for a mere £50 on display in our “Baronial” hall. It plays nicely with Julie at the pedals and we sing hymns and psalms at it.

Another time we went on the off chance to Aylsham and there was a book auction held over from the week before. Knowing a little about antique history books I was able to make some famous additions to my collection, and hope to be able to start a successful? Internet book business as a result. Time will tell. See yourlocalhistory.inf

I have now completed/ invented a new card game with Julie’s help. We hope that it may prove saleable – again time will tell. Called “Match It”.

Christmas this year should prove exciting as we have invited all the extended family, and Mum and Dad and Mary and family, and Angela and family as well as more immediate family are to attend. Currently we are visiting Aunty Frances in Gairloch; looking out of the window is a fantastic scene with snow-capped mountains.

View from Aunty Fra’s window.

Mark and Julie at Loch Maree

I have here completed the family history CD Rom, and the local history also. I hope to have managed to give that a wider appeal, again who knows. See yourlocalhistory.info or rarebookco.com.

At present I play tennis once a week and only occasional golf. The latter at Sheringham, which is a bit of a trek but well worth it. Any visitors are welcome to a game, or a set or two. At home, you can relax, and Julie will entertain you at the piano. We have two spare bedrooms, so let us know when to book you in. I am hoping to gradually phase myself out of general practice and fully retire from medicine fairly soon now. I have plenty else to occupy me. My next venture will really amaze, but that is for the future.

Mary, probably at Christopher’s christening.

ary, the daughter of Joseph Rumble and Joyce Caesar, was born at Southborough, Kent on 20 June 1949. She married Derek Tate and they had four children. When Mary was a teenager she didn't like the plain name "Mary", so she informally changed it to Maryanne.

In a 1989 letter to John Fall1  she wrote:

Mark, my elder brother, and I never got on.  We used to fight like cat and dog always. Heaven only knows how my parents survived us at all. When I was small I can remember the school children forming a circle around us and chanting:

"Mark and Mary must agree

Like two little birdies on a tree"

(Mark – I disagree – that’s what my parents said!)

I hated it - Sarcastic lot!.  Mark and I still don't hit it off  and  we don't often see him. At least we no longer argue! . . . I'm glad to say that I do get along with my younger sister Angela, who married a journalist recently. . .(We get on much better now –2002-Mark)

I met Derek when I went away to College in Leeds. Before this I lived in Kent. I trained as a teacher of Home Economics, but it really wasn't what I wanted to do and before I finished I applied to Manchester University to train as a teacher of deaf children. I loved all the jobs I had, teaching the deaf, but made one career move which was wrong for me. I went to be a lecturer in Oxford, training teachers of the deaf. I only stuck it out for 18 months and then retired to be at home for eight years. Last year I made my come-back and I am now working for a private company as an audiologist, and loving it.

Derek and Maryanne hadfour children,.  Derek and Maryanne's relationship did not last. In February 1993, after twenty-three years, they divorced. By the end of 1993 Maryanne had moved to The Hollies, 88 High Street, Boston Spa, near Wetherby, England LS23 6E. By 1994 she was working as an audiologist in a school for deaf children. She later married Robert Maltby, professor of classics at Leeds, but is separated in 2002.
